Порожній і прострілений
Мовчанням витканний
Як Великодній понеділок – дев’ятнадцять шістнадцять /1916
Коли свічки гасять…
Післяобідній чай
Проходив, як зазвичай
Аж поки випадкова куля не зрізала пелюстки капелюшка
Дуже здивованої леді
цей факт увійшов до британських інциклопедій
готель ренесанс за вікнами –
Ренесанс виборювання свободи
Ейра прагнула підписання угоди
Декларації створення нового світу
3 кулею в серці
після обіду
Поет, Патрік Пірс…
І Лесь Курбас,
що ставив театр, навпроти
Розстріляне відродження
Чинили супротив
Системі
«Ми вільний народ, а не племя!»
Сто років минуло
Незалежними стати – синонім
В серці має застрягти
куля
На перший погляд зозуля
Життя накувала їм мало
А з іншого –
вічність героям вона накувала
Їм вірші б писати
Творити театри
Застрягати
кулям в стаканах
Чого Незалежність вся в ранах?!
Я не п‘ю віскі
Та наповню два стакани
За прострілені дві країни
Мир, він такий, що настане!

The whiskey glass from the Shelbourne Hotel*
Empty and shot with a weapon.
Woven with silence.
Like Easter Monday – nineteen sixteen /1916,
When candles extinguish…
Afternoon tea
Proceeded as usual
Until a stray bullet trimmed the petals of a hat
Of a very surprised lady
This fact entered the British encyclopedias
The hotel Renaissance beyond the windows –
Renaissance of seeking freedom
Eire sought the signing of the Declaration
Of creating a new world
With a bullet in the heart after lunch
There was a Poet, Patrick Pearse…
And Les Kurbas,
who staged theater, opposite
Shot revival
They resisted the system,
“We are a free nation, not a tribe!”
A hundred years have passed
To become independent – a synonym
In the heart, a bullet is stuck
At first glance, a cuckoo
Life seemed little to them
But from another perspective –
eternity bestowed upon heroes
To write poems
To create theaters
One must get stuck with bullets in glasses
Why is Independence all in wounds?!
I don’t drink whiskey
But I fill two glasses
For two wounded countries
Peace, it will come!
In December 2023, members of the Ukrainian Creative Hub at MoLI visited the exhibition ‘Self-Determination: A Global Perspective’ at the Irish Museum of Modern Art (IMMA) with poet Hazel Hogan and curator Dr Nathan O’Donnell. The group responded to items on display as part of this Decade of Centenaries exhibition.
*A bespoke whiskey glass commemorating a memorable event in Irish history, when on Easter Monday, 1916, a stray bullet clipped the petals of a very surprised lady’s bonnet while she was enjoying Afternoon Tea at The Shelbourne.
*Oleksandr-Zenon Stepanovych Kurbas (Ukrainian: Олександр-Зенон Степанович Курбас; 24 February 1887 – 30 November 1937),
was a Ukrainian movie and theater director. He is considered by many to be the most important Ukrainian theater director of the 20th century.
